Edouard, collectionneur et libraire d'ancien, possède un précieux cahier d'apprentissage datant du XVIIe siècle qui aurait été tenu par un certain Melchior Soubeyran. Lorsqu'il le confie au narrateur, qui s'y plonge, celui-ci se trouve précipité à Moscou, en 1689, au chevet de Jean-Baptiste Tavernier agonisant sous les yeux de son jeune apprenti. A plus de quatre-vingts ans, l'auteur protestant des Six Voyages en Turquie, en Perse et aux Indes, qui fut le pourvoyeur de Louis XIV en diamants d'exception, a été contraint de reprendre la route de l'Orient.
Ce septième départ est une conséquence des persécutions déchaînées par la révocation de l'édit de Nantes, mais aussi des manigances de son flamboyant beau-frère, soi-disant prince du sang persan et assurément escroc de la plus belle eau. Tandis que son maître délire et menace des fantômes qu'il est seul à voir, le jeune Melchior s'enfonce dans son cahier d'écriture comme un animal traqué dans une terre trop meuble.
La fièvre contamine les pages, dans la nuit moscovite, et le narrateur, happé à son tour, n'y échappera pas...
